Torn Labrum: A Return to Division I Baseball

A Division I baseball player returned from a torn labrum through Petroski Physio’s structured, performance-focused rehab approach. By rebuilding shoulder strength, stability, and throwing capacity with data-driven progression, he returned to play stronger than before and fully prepared for the upcoming season.

Meet The Athlete

Our athlete is a standout center fielder for Saint Rose University, a high-level Division I baseball program. His role demands explosive rotational power, overhead throwing capacity, sprint acceleration, and repeated shoulder stability under high load.

What was the challenge?

Just one week into his summer season, he slid into second base and heard a pop in his throwing shoulder. Pain set in immediately, and he was forced to leave the game — knowing something was seriously wrong. The uncertainty around his season, and potentially his future in baseball, hit quickly.

After returning home to the Philadelphia area and consulting with a trusted orthopedic surgeon, imaging confirmed a torn labrum.

He struggled with:

  • Uncertainty around whether he could return to high-level performance

  • Fear of losing time during a key development phase of his athletic career

  • Shoulder strength and stability deficits impacting throwing mechanics and confidence

Despite being surrounded by a strong medical team, he needed a structured, individualized, evidence-based plan to return to his sport — not just recover.

What was our process?

We began by building a clear, individualized roadmap tailored to the demands of baseball — especially overhead throwing.

Step 1: Assessment and Planning

We completed:

  • A full shoulder mobility and strength evaluation

  • Testing of rotational capacity and scapular control

  • Force and positional analysis specific to throwing demands

This gave us clarity on timelines, priorities, and key performance indicators.

Step 2: Progressive Strength and Stability

His rehab focused on:

  • Foundational shoulder and scapular stability work

  • Gradual progression of rotational and overhead loading

  • Strength development through multiple angles and planes

  • Structured throwing mechanics rebuild

Every stage of progression was supported by testing to ensure safety and readiness.

Step 3: Data-Driven Return-to-Sport

Throughout his rehab, we monitored:

  • Rotational strength symmetry

  • Throwing mechanics quality

  • Shoulder stability under velocity and load

  • Gradual return-to-throwing milestones

As his performance improved, rehab transitioned into a baseball-specific return-to-play program — including a hitting progression, positional movement training, and velocity build-up.

Where is he now?

After completing his structured rehab and return-to-throwing progression, he returned to baseball throwing and hitting better than he did pre-injury. His surgeon even commented that this was the best post-labrum repair recovery he had seen.

He is now entering the upcoming season fully cleared, confident, and already gaining attention from MLB organizations.

We create individualized recovery plans after injuries like ACL tears, shoulder surgeries, and muscle strains to help you safely return to sport and daily life.

We help athletes rebuild strength and movement after common injuries like rotator cuff issues, tendinitis, and ligament sprains so you can perform with confidence again.

We guide you through every phase of recovery — from post-surgery rehab to performance training — so you don’t just return, you come back stronger.
